the reality of the world we live in
Between 1960 and 2021, the share of families with children under 18 headed by single-parents increased from 8.2% to almost 29.7%.
Between 2000 and 2021 the share of two-parent families declined by 2.6 percentage points.
Today 1 in 5 children under the age of 18 — a total of about 15.7 million — are being raised without a father.
Single motherhood has grown so common in America that today 80 percent of single-parent families are headed by single mothers — a third live in poverty.
Compared to kids raised by two parents, those in single-parent families are more likely to face negative outcomes. The research on this is complicated and sometimes conflicting, but it's continually progressing. However, more and more evidence shows that factors like strong relationships, mental health of parents, money situation, and access to resources have a bigger impact on a child's success than just the family setup.
For many years, discussions among researchers ,advocates, and policymakers about single-parent families have primarily centered on potential negative impacts on children.
What if, instead, we shift our focus to identifying the essential elements for children to thrive?
